Writen by Bill Willingham:

Just as all movies aren’t westerns, all comics aren’t superheroes. Far from it. But superheroes are still one of (if not the) dominant genres in the comic book industry, and by far comprise the major output of our two largest American comics publishers, Marvel and DC. More to the point, it’s the comic book genre I want to focus on here.

DC’s greatest icon, Superman, one of the handful of fictional characters known throughout the world, no longer seems to be too proud of America. He still finds occasion to mention he fights for truth and justice, but no longer finishes that famous line with, “…and the American way.” Then again, according to the most recent movie, he’s become a creepy stalker and a deadbeat dad, so maybe not openly linking himself to the American ideal isn’t such a bad thing.

Marvel’s legendary patriot Captain America, in a comic book story published shortly after 9/11 spent a good part of the issue apologizing to the super terrorist he was battling about all of the terrible things America did in its pursuit of the cold war against the Soviets. “(But) we’ve changed. We’ve learned,” he whines. “My people never knew!” Then again, at least ol’ Cap was fighting the bad guy, so maybe there’s still hope.

Except that In another later appearance, in a different title (same company) Captain America willingly goes along with a government cover-up of a incident that resulted in massive civilian casualties. He not only goes along with it, he doesn’t even bat an eye when asked to do so.

Then again Cap’s dead now, so problem solved, right?

Those are but two examples of the slow but steady degradation of the American superhero over the years. The ’super’ is still there, more so than ever, but there seems to be a slow leak in the ‘hero’ part. There’s even a term for it, coined by (I’m not sure who, but it might have been one of two respected comics journalists) either Dirk Deppey or Tom Spurgeon. Folks, we’re smack dab in the midst of the Age of Superhero Decadence. Old fashioned ideals of courage and patriotism, backed by a deep virtue and unshakable code, seem to be… well, old fashioned.

Full disclosure time. I’m at least partially to blame for this steady chipping away of the goodness of our comic book heroes. In my very first comic series Elementals, first published close to thirty years ago, I was eager to update old superhero tropes, making my characters more real, edgier, darker — less heroic and a good deal more vulgar than the (then) current standard. Elementals was one of the first of what was later dubbed the ‘grim and gritty’ movement in comic books. And to complicate my confession, I’m still proud of much of that early work. At least my crass and corrupted Elemental heroes still fought, albeit imperfectly, for the clear good, against the clear evil.

What can I say? When I was young and foolish I was young and foolish. In hindsight I should have realized then what is so obvious today. In any industry, especially one as inbred and insular as the comics world, one excess feeds another. Of course we didn’t think of it as excess. We called it stretching the boundaries. Pushing the envelope. Doing a bigger and better car chase in this one than they did in that one. And every other cliche we could summon to our defense. “If they got away with having their hero accidentally kill his opponent in that book, then we’re going to outdo them by having our guy purposely kill someone in ours!” And so on, until today an onscreen (and quite graphic) disemboweling of a superhero’s opponent is not only allowed, it’s no big thing.

Don’t get me wrong. All is not completely dire in the comic book industry. For the most part superhero stories still involve the good guys battling the bad guys for identifiably good causes. And even in that story mentioned above where Captain America participates in the sinister cover-up, under the pen of the same writer, a few issues later he resurrects a shade of his former self (summons his inner John Wayne if you will) and tells an evil alien invader he’s fighting, “Surrender? Surrender??? You think this letter on my forehead stands for France?” (The letter is an ‘A’ for America, of course.) Good one, Cap.

Along with many others, I’ve come to the conclusion that we’ve gone too far, but not irreversibly so.

So, finally to the point of this note. Borrowing some wisdom from the famous parable of the mote in one fellow’s eye, and the whole beam in another’s, it would be the height of hypocrisy for me to make any call for our industry to clean up its act, until I’ve first cleaned up my own. I’ve already made some progress down that road. In my run writing the Robin series (of Batman fame), I made sure both Batman and Robin were portrayed as good, steadfast heroes, with unshakable personal codes and a firm grasp of their mission. I even got to do a story where Robin parachuted into Afghanistan with a group of very patriotic military superheroes on a full-scale, C130 gunship-supported combat mission. And in my short run on the Shadowpact series I kept to the same standard (but with less success as several story details were editorially imposed).

But ’some’ progress isn’t enough. It’s time to make public a decision I’ve already made in private. I’m going to shamelessly steal a line from Rush Limbaugh, who said, concerning a different matter, “Go ahead and have your recession if you insist, but you’ll have to pardon me if I choose not to participate.” And from now on that’s my position on superhero comics. Go ahead and have your Age of Superhero Decadence, if you insist, but you’ll have to pardon me if I no longer choose to participate.

No more superhero decadence for me. Period. From now on, when I write within the superhero genre I intend to do it right. And if I am ever again privileged to be allowed to write Superman, you can bet your sweet bootie that he’ll find the opportunity to bring back “and the American way,” to his famous credo.

For now, I invite others in my business to follow suit, as their own consciences dictate. We’ll talk more about this later.

As I said above, not all comic stories are about superheroes. Comics are a medium, not a genre. There’s still plenty of room for gray areas, stories of moral ambiguity, and the eternal struggle of imperfect people trying to find their way in a bleak and indifferent world. I plan to continue all of that and more in my Fables series. But for me at least the superhero genre should be different, better, with higher standards, loftier ideals and a more virtuous — more American — point of view.

Call this my mission statement. Or even my pledge.

I was watching a documentary called Encounters at the End of the World the other day and though it was pretty boring there was one scene that's been haunting me ever since. It's about Antarctica, or rather, the people who work down there, the scientists doing surveys & such. It did have some beautiful visuals of under the ice and the creatures that live under there.

But the only real interesting part was the scene of a single penguin who wanders off to die. If you've seen March of the Penguins you know all about how they walk for miles to mate. But everynow and then one will stop and decide for who knows what reason to go off in another direction. One was captured on film in this documentary doing just that.

It stood still for a few minutes, don't know how long it had been standing there once the filmakers saw it, while the rest of the penguins went right past it on their merry way. Then as if it was perfectly natural this one lone penguin starts off towards the mountains with just as much determination as the others have to go mate.

One scientist was talked about it said that he were to rush out and stop the penguin and pull it back to the others it would simply resume it's solo path as soon as it was set free. I guess it happens enough that they've tried that. This penguin walks for miles away from it's mating grounds and any known food source and just walks away.

People in the camps are under strict orders that if a penguin comes wandering through they are to stand still and not get in it's way. We see the penguin walking past a person as it waddles through the camp not giving anybody any attention some 60 miles off it's usual course.

This penguin is shown for awhile until the film makers stop following it, most likely they can't go past a certain point from the camp, but the penguin just keps on walking away. It looks so happy with it's direction.

They know the way it's going, and that there's no way it can live past a certain point, even if it were to turn around, but it never stops. It just keeps on going.

Happily walking towards it's death.

The first episode of The Ex List was fantastic, the second episode not so much. Most of the humor was gone. I missed Smallville last week and tried watching it just now on the CW's official web site, but just got a black screen and it never played.

I was also disappointed to find that I did not enjoy Eleventh Hour as much as I was hoping I would. I was bored silly after 10 minutes. Won't be tuning in to that one again unless I hear rave reviews on future storylines enough for me to give it a second chance.

I enjoy when I get into shows the second time around, like with LOST. I was excited about it when I saw the previews back when it first aired, but I missed the first 40 minutes or so when I finally tuned in I only watched about 15 minutes and decided 'nah, not for me'. Then 2 years later I'm reading a good review talking about it's epic long storyline and sub-plots so I decided to give it another chance and now it's one of my favorite shows.

Got me some sushi & teryaki and waiting for Sunshine to start at 8:15 in HIGH DEFINITION!! I love this movie, and this'll be my first time seeing it in hi-def.

i seriously need to give more love to this journal. My life has been frantic and hectic to say the least these past few months. I got so caught up with certain things I actually began to miss the internet. Is that more funny or sad? Don't answer that lol.

Just finished watching the first two episodes of Swingtown. It was a little slow, but otherwise it has potential. Not the greatest thing around right now as I was hoping for, but I will be continuing to watch til it either ends or gets bad.

Dang there isn't gonna be squat to watch on TV the next few weeks. Most of shows had their season finales this week or last.

Smallville had a decent ending, kinda boring.

House was a great ending, with the second to last episode being the greatest episode of House in all it's four year history in my opinion.

Bones finale was just out of place. Not a good episode at all I felt, much less for a finale.

How I Met You Mother's ending was abrupt. I felt like it was just cutting away to a commercial, then the credits started rolling.

Big Bang Theory was a good ending, especially if it gets canceled in the off season then it'll work as a nice series finale.

Medium same thing. I don't know if it's coming back next season or not but if not it worked great as a series finale, but I hope it comes back.

Two & A Half Men was funny, as usual.

Ghost Whisperer was great with a not huge twist but a well thought out puzzler at the end with the missing shadow.

Criminal Minds I thought didn't work well for some reason. Which surprised me as it's one of my favorite shows right now.

CSI: NY ....um... hm. I can't even remember what happened at the moment.

Grey's Anatomy I still have on the DVR I'll watch it probably tomorrow. No rush here as I've missed most of season 4 anyways.

Ugly Betty also in the DVR. I just started watching this midway through the second season and missed some episodes here & there.

Law & Order I forgot to record, damnit. But Anthony Anderson's doing a good job as the new guy in such short a time. Must be hard for him as an actor. But he's doing good.

As for the summer, the only two shows I'm looking forward to now is Swingtown, based on the commercials and Molly Parker, whom I adore. And The mole. I'm fucking stoked that Mole is coming back. One of the better yet underestimated and under watched of the reality shows.

Crap I really don't want to go into work today :(

Watched Ghost Dog & Kentucky Fried Movie this weekend. They were only alright. Also started Survivor: Guatemala and made it through the first 3 discs.

It's getting hot these days. Work is gonna be killer seeing as how we've got 8 of the biggest ovens in the state in one building.

Spun, now that was a good movie. Very funny.

Spent the day being lazy, took about 3 naps. Been working so much lately it was good to be a vegetable. Also watched ROH Unscripted III and Where the Day Takes You, an old movie from the 90s I haven't seen since it came out but has popped up in my head alot over the years. It's still pretty good after all these years.

Just gave the midget cat his treats and now he's hovering over me looking for more, heh.

I just tried watching Across The Universe. I had such high hopes for that movie. Every ad I saw and review I read made it sound so good. The perfect type of movie I would love. I made it through about 25 minutes and was just bored to death.

Finished with Veronica Mars season 3 & Supernatural season 1. wasn't too thrilled with the Supernatural overall. I may or may not get season 2 in the future.

About to try to finish Deadwood season 2 discs 2-4 in one night soon as I post this.

Work has been getting busy. Did more OT this weekend. Good because I'm going on vacation in July and want to save as much money as possible. Going to have to spend some this week as I need more DVD-Rs and my Norton anti-virus is about to expire for the year. Plus I need new boots.

I just saw an ad saying new episodes of L Word are coming.... in 2009!! WTF?!? Why even bother advertising that now? I should be getting season 3 from Netflix within a month, need to check my Queue. Been waiting for Six String Samurai for like 2 months now.

Well, I caved in and ordered pizza again today. I've been doing great on my diet for weeks now doing almost 90% liquid intake only. So one night of pizza won't be too bad, I hope, lol.

Watched The Dead Girl last night. Great movie for the most part, kinda dragged on towards the end a bit. Now I've got Black Snake Moan in the DVD player and I'm about to watch that. Heard it was good.

I've got one box of Girl Scout Cookies sitting on my desk just calling my name. I bout a big box full of them and sent them out to my friends in the mail just as a kinda 'hey what's up?' thing. Now there's one box left tempting me. I'll probably nibble on them over the course of next week.

Work-wise everything's the same. We're picking up more sales and slowly getting the night shift people back on nights and getting new temps to the days. We even had OT this weekend so business must be good.

Life-wise is same as always of course. Still in debt so I'm not even letting myself think about going out & doing anything that'll cost money until I get more paid off. I can afford to if I really needed to, but I want to get this over with as soon as possible, I've got a vacation planned in July.

In happier news my She & Him CD arrived yesterday. I loves me some Zooey!! I'm planning on listening to it for the first time tonight after a couple of movies. I'm excited for this. :)

I've had Six String Samurai in my Netflix list at #1 for about a month now. It keeps changing from available now to long wait. I wonder if I'll ever get it.

The midget cat chewed through a speaker wire the other night and now I have no sound in my left side surround speaker. I'm so pissed at him but he's a cat, so what can ya do ya know? Now I'm going to have to put an old fashioned duct tape splice on a $600 DTS speaker system. Just call me McGuyver.

Faith No More blasting away on the DVD player, sipping at a mango madness Snapple, eating a girl scout cookie, organizing my ever growing DVD collection while my midget cat gets medieval on the toy rat I bought him while Ghost Whisperer and Smackdown record on the DVR in the background for later viewing.

Oh yeah, typical Friday night around here.
